An internet call came on my mobile - NARMADASHANKAR calling......I picked up the call and a very low tone sweet voice said "Narmade Har - Om Namah Shivaya - I am Bramachari Naramadashankar speaking how are you ?'. I answered baba I am well. He said I am coming to Delhi to visit the Austrian Embassy can you meet me. I said surely I will meet you.

We were Facebook friends and we came in contact while he liked some of my photos and videos. We chatted a bit about Onakareshwar and Maa Narmada but for the first time I was about to meet him in Delhi. I gave him my phone number and asked him to call whenever he is in town.

Baba Narmadashankar in my office

After a month Baba Naramadashankar called me and handed over the phone to some IAS officer who loves him for his simplicity and deep knowledge. He said if you can - come to Jaisalmer House. I was ready and left for place. After reaching I realised it was Supreme Court's Secretariat. The security guard were aware of my arrival. They opened the gates and allowed my vehicle to come in. Someone from that IAS officers office was waiting for us. He took us to the room where Baba Naramadashankar and that IAS were having tea. We were also offered tea and baba said I want to stay one night with you if possible because I have a train tomorrow for Indore. I was ready. I took him with me to my office guest house. While driving I was reluctant to ask that whether he is an Indian or a westerner. Foolishly, I asked "baba are you a foreigner ". He replied "NO - I am an Indian born to Austrian parents" and he laughed.

The first time I met a Mechanical Engineer sadhu

So we arrived at our office guest house to get more surprises from him. After having a glass of water he told me that he was a Mechanical Engineer and than he left Europe and became a monk in Madhya Pradesh where he met his Guru Baba Raghunath ji Maharaj. Me, my brother Tony were zapped as we saw a Dreadlocked Sadhu who was a Mechanical Engineer became as Astang Yogi....

Again foolishly I asked him baba Do you know Omkar Kriya. He laughed and said You know about it. I just said I try to do it. After a while he changed his position and went inside and started his Omkar - the way he changed his aura was like a heavenly experience for us and we sat on the floor realising that we have committed a mistake by sitting next to him. But his simplicity encouraged us to do so. After he finished he said Can I ask you one thing - I said Why not - he said I just want one cup to tea, if possible.

Baba Narmadashankar was born in a scientist family residing in Austria, Europe. He completed his Mechanical Engineering and wanted to see Mahatma Gandhi's ashram in Sabarmati. He took permission from his parents and came to India. While he was in Sabarmati he saw a picture of a place and asked the receptionist what place is that. She told him its Onkareshwar. This was the turning point in a Mechanical Engineers life for whom the best jobs were waiting in Auto Industry of Europe. He took a train to Onkareshwar - without having any knowledge of the area or knowing our language. When he arrived he saw life with a different perspective. He admired Indian lifestyle that required minimum money to survive. And he realised that the root of this lies in Snatan Dharma which shows the right path to any human being. He decided to go on a different journey. He wanted to be a yogi now - but having the right Guru was his issue now.

So after a while roaming here and there in search of a guru he met his Gurubhai Yogi Kishan Das baba who was known for his anger but soft heart. Kishan Das asked Narmada baba to accompany him to his cave away from the human settlements. Narmada baba followed him and he was offered a space in that cave. But Kishan Das never told Narmada Baba about his yogic path. But one thing he realised that at 4 am every morning a sadhu comes down from the mountain and Kishan Baba used to follow him to the banks of Maa Narmada. One day baba also decided to follow them. On the banks of Narmada baba Naramdashankar founded his guru Baba Raghunath Maharaja, who attained the status of a rishi in Astang Yog.

His Holiness Baba Raghunath ji Maharaj

Guru Raghunath Maharaj accepted him as his disciple and named him Narmadashankar after holy river Maa Narmada. Now, he was assigned his own cave and the road was tough. Initially, he had to live as a hermit for nearly 12 yrs in a cave or a jungle away from human interaction. This was like acquiring a degree in Astang Yog. There are 64 kinds of meditational paths in this yoga and Baba chose the Unnamani Kriya - the most difficult of all. From now on his job was to walk on the path of YAM, NIYAM, ASANA, PRATYAHARA, PRANYAMA, DHYAN, DHARANA & SAMADHI. Eating what is available sometimes only leaves or milk, controlling the breathes, controlling the mind, and secret kriyas as well. Encountering leopards, snakes, lizards, harsh weather conditions - all very part of the syllabus

After 12 yrs in a dense jungle alone - he took permission from his guru to go for Narmada Parikrama. This parikrama takes 3 yrs 9 months to complete. You have to be barefoot and without money to do in a right way. He completed that as well. Than he mastered the most difficult asanas - GORAKHASANA - in which you have to master 64 asana and 24 mudras in one.

The most difficult Gorakhasana

But this yogi is never serious - he is always laughing, smiling and cracking some lighter jokes though he maintains strict disciplines from his sect. He is an encyclopaedia when it comes to places in India and he loves to talk about the best engines of Mercedes, BMW and even super bikes. So you have a yogi who can talk on astang yog and on cars simultaneously.

always calm n composed

Biker baba

People love him for his utter simplicity & deep routed gyan on various subjects. He has also become a farmer now and has command on alternate medicines as well. Once he came to Delhi while going back to Austria to visit his parents. He saw a Rolls Royce showroom - the guard was not allowing him inside. When he spoke English he let him in. The Manager said "baba this RR is not for you". Baba said - I know this is the Ghost series... the Manager was taken aback and baba Narmadashanakar asked the Manager - do you Osho and how many RRs did he have. He said I Don't know. Baba told him that he was a Guru and owned 93 RRs. The manager opened the gates of the Rolls Royce for him.
